Nota de alcance (en)

Origin
Neotropical

Occurrence
Pantropical (UPHOF 1968). In Venezuela, the species is widely distributed particularly in savannas and other open regions, occurring from sea level up to 900 m a.s.l. (900 metters above sea level)

Ethnobotanical and general use

Nutritional use
Hyptis suaveolens, a pantropical aromatic annual, is used mainly in medicine. However, in some parts of West Africa a mintflavoured tea substitute is prepared as a beverage from the leaves and flowers.

Economical utilization
The foliage is the source of an essential oil extracted from the glandular hairs and used for adultering patchouli (from Microtanea cymosa PRAIN.). Branches are placed under beds and chairs to drive away bedbugs.

Medical use
Leaves, branches and flowers (inflorescences) are the useful parts. Leaves and buds are used in antirheumatic baths. Leaves in decoction for hot baths are also applied against muscular weakness and gout. Externally applied, the baths also combat lice and worms. Leaves and flowers in infusion act as a hypotensive. The entire plant in decoction for a bath combats scabies and insect bites. Leaves and flowering parts are used internally against cough and as a digestive. Taken internally the plants have stimulant and sudorific effects. Digestive, emollient, hypotensor, abortive and even aphrodisiac; used against fever, haemorrhoids, hypertension, impotence, diseases of the skin, scabies, cough, muscular debility, rheumatism.

Method of use
It is applied externally as a bath, or internally as decoctions and infusions. To prepare the tea, 1litter of boiling water is poured over a handful flowers and a handful of leaves; a cup of tea with sugar taken before the meals stimulates the appetite, while when taken after meals it is used as a digestive.

Chemical contents
An essential oil is present in the glandular hairs.
It is composed mainly of alpha- and B-pinene, camphene,
menthol, cymene and chavicol, as well as
malic acid, citric acid, and minerals.

Folk medicinal uses

Browne speaks of this species as being of use in nervous and visceral disorders and it seems likely that it is still in use for stomach-ache (see H. pectinata) and indigestion (alone or with Cissus sicyoides) and for ‘a fluttering heart'. It is used in Africa for stomach-ache and colic, headaches, fever and as a general beverage.
